Private, Group, or Online Pilates? How to Choose the Right Option for YOU

One of the most common questions I hear is: "Should I do private sessions, join a class, or start with an online program?"
And my answer is always the same: it depends on you.
There's no single "right way" to start Pilates—just the approach that works best for your learning style, schedule, comfort level, and budget. Let me walk you through each option so you can make the choice that feels right for YOUR journey.
Private Sessions: Personalised, Focused, Transformative
Private sessions are perfect if you:
Want personalized attention focused entirely on you
Have injuries or specific concerns to work around
Prefer learning at your own pace without group pressure
Want to build a solid foundation before joining classes
Value flexible scheduling that works around your life
What you get: Undivided attention for the entire session, faster progression because instruction is focused only on you, complete customization to your body and goals, immediate form correction, and the ability to ask any question without interrupting a class.
What actually happens: We start exactly where YOU are—whether you're a complete beginner, returning after years away, or dealing with specific limitations. I watch every movement and give instant feedback. You can ask questions freely. We work on YOUR specific goals and concerns, and I tailor every exercise to your current ability. You build confidence in a supportive, judgment-free space.
The investment: Yes, private sessions cost more per session than group classes. But consider this: would you rather spend 8 group classes feeling confused and unsure, or 3-4 private sessions building a solid foundation before joining group classes feeling confident and capable?
Many of my clients do exactly this—a handful of privates to learn properly, then transition to group classes with the fundamentals already in place. You progress faster, avoid developing poor habits, and actually enjoy the process because you understand what you're doing.
And some clients choose to stay with private sessions permanently—they love having sessions completely tailored to their body and goals, the deeper conversations about movement and wellbeing, and the genuine relationship that develops over time. There's something special about one-to-one work that goes beyond just the exercises—it becomes a dedicated space for YOUR body, YOUR questions, YOUR progress, with someone who truly knows you and how you move.
Private sessions aren't indulgent or "extra." They're an investment in learning properly from the start.
Group Classes: Community, Energy, Accountability
Group classes are ideal if you:
Enjoy the energy of moving with others
Want a more affordable option
Love community and social connection
Thrive with regular scheduled times
Find motivation in group settings
What you get: A supportive environment where you build friendships alongside fitness, consistent routine with regular scheduled times that help with accountability, the benefit of seeing how others interpret movements (which genuinely helps learning), and an affordable way to practice regularly.
Important note: Not all group classes are created equal. I keep my classes intentionally small (max 6-8 people) so you still get individual attention and feedback. Large classes where the instructor can't see you properly might save money, but you won't get the guidance you need to progress safely and effectively.
What to look for in group classes:
Small class sizes (ideally under 10 people)
An instructor who provides individual feedback and corrections
A welcoming environment where questions are encouraged
Modifications offered for different levels and abilities
A community that feels supportive, not competitive
Group classes can be wonderfully motivating. There's something special about moving together, supporting each other, and building genuine connections with people who share your goals.
Online Programmes: Flexibility, Affordability, Confidence
Online Pilates is perfect if you:
Need maximum flexibility to fit practice around your life
Want to revisit lessons as many times as needed
Prefer learning without pressure to keep up with others
Want to build confidence before joining live classes
Like working at your own pace
Prefer affordable access to comprehensive instruction
What you get: Complete freedom to practice at 6am before work, during naptime, or 10pm after everyone's in bed—whenever works for YOU. The ability to pause, rewind, and repeat as many times as needed. No pressure to keep up with anyone else. Affordable access to quality instruction with unlimited rewatching.
But here's the crucial thing: not all online Pilates is created equal.
What doesn't work:
❌ Random YouTube videos that don't teach you properly
❌ Follow-along classes without proper instruction
❌ Programmes that rush through fundamentals
❌ Content that just has you copying movements without understanding
What you actually need:
✅ Progressive structure that builds week by week
✅ Proper instruction on fundamentals (breathing, alignment, core engagement)
✅ Clear explanation of WHY, not just what to do
✅ Ability to revisit lessons as needed
✅ Modifications shown for different levels
This is exactly why I created Core Foundations—a 6-week programme specifically designed for beginners that teaches Pilates properly from the ground up.
Each week builds on the last (no random workouts). Fundamentals are taught thoroughly—breathing, neutral pelvis, proper core engagement. I explain what you should FEEL in each exercise, not just what to do. You can repeat any week as many times as you need.
By the end, you have a solid understanding of Pilates fundamentals, confidence in your practice, the ability to do sessions independently, and the option to join live classes feeling prepared.
Online Pilates isn't "second best" to in-person. It's a different option with different benefits—and for many people, it's exactly what they need.
Mixing Approaches: The Hybrid Option
Here's what many of my most successful clients do: they mix approaches.
Common combinations:
Start with 3-4 private sessions to build foundation → join group classes for community and accountability → supplement with online practice at home
Begin with online programme to learn basics privately → join group classes when confident → occasional private session for form checks
Attend group classes regularly → use online sessions when schedule doesn't allow live classes → occasional private for specific goals
There's no rule that says you must choose only one option. In fact, combining approaches often gives you the best of all worlds.
How to Choose: Questions to Ask Yourself
Still not sure which option is right for you?
Ask yourself these questions:
About your learning style:
Do I learn better with individual attention or in a group?
Am I self-conscious as a beginner, or do I enjoy learning alongside others?
Do I like structure and accountability, or do I prefer complete flexibility?
About your schedule:
Can I commit to regular class times, or do I need maximum flexibility?
Do I have childcare/work constraints that make fixed schedules difficult?
Would I prefer practicing at home or going to a studio/class?
About your body:
Do I have injuries or concerns that need individual attention?
Am I comfortable in a group setting with my current fitness level?
Would I benefit from personalized modifications?
About your budget:
What can I realistically afford to invest in my practice?
Is this a short-term commitment or long-term investment?
Would I rather pay more per session for individual attention or less for group access?
About your goals:
Am I looking to build a solid foundation quickly?
Do I want community and social connection alongside fitness?
Is convenience and flexibility my top priority?
Your answers to these questions will guide you toward the right choice.
The Truth About "The Best Option"
Here's what I want you to know: all three options work.
I've seen incredible transformations happen through private sessions, group classes, and online programmes. The "best" option isn't about which is objectively superior—it's about which one YOU will actually stick with.
The most expensive private sessions won't help if you can't afford to maintain them. The most affordable online programme won't work if you need live accountability. The most supportive group class won't serve you if the schedule never fits your life.
The best option is the one that:
Fits your actual life (not your idealised version of your life)
Matches how you genuinely learn best
Feels sustainable long-term
You'll actually show up for consistently
That's it. That's the formula.
